2012 Budget: Will the temporary suspension of the Sunday trading rules extend to the rules protecting the rights of employees?
The short answer is that it is not yet known. The Chancellor announced in the Budget that the Sunday Trading laws would be relaxed for 8 weekends from 22 July 2012 to 9 September 2012 inclusive, recognising that the Olympics and Paralympics represent a unique opportunity for UK businesses.
The current law set out in the Employment Rights Act 1996 provides a right for shop workers (other than those employed to work solely on Sundays) to have the right to refuse to work on Sundays. The indication from the report published by the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17419351) suggests that these rights will also be temporarily suspended .
Emergency legislation is expected in early April 2012 so watch this space...
