New Copyright Law Exceptions expected 1 June 2014
New exceptions to UK copyright law are expected to come into effect on 1 June 2014.
The amendments to the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 are mainly as a result of the Hargreaves Review upon which we have previously commented. The main amendments include a new exception for copying for private use by individuals, extension of the scope of the private research and study exception. Perhaps more significantly for businesses there are amendments to the exception which allows quotation of works and the use of works for parody or caricature.
For more information on this and a more detailed explanation, see the Intellectual Property Office’s website: www.ipo.gov.uk/hargreaves-copyright-techreview We will keep you up to date on the entry into force of the amendments.
