Nick was admitted in 1988. Since then he has undertaken property and associated work for a wide variety of mainly owner-managed businesses – in many cases providing not only legal services but a sounding board for new ideas and ventures. It is this involvement and interest in clients and their businesses and goals which gives job satisfaction and has enabled Nick to form strong and long-standing relationships with many clients. This emphasis on relationships, plus being available for advice at any time or to offer views, assistance or referral on any issues, lies at the core of the Sloan Plumb Wood ethos.
In the past 20-plus years, Nick has undertaken or been involved in a wide variety of property-based work. He believes that this variation has avoided a blinkered approach to practice and is the reason why after all this time he remains enthusiastic – after all, ‘variety is the spice of life’.
Work undertaken by Nick includes the following:
Development – both commercial and residential, including site acquisition and assembly and disposal. This work ranges from initial acquisition or sale contracts, options, joint venture and consortium agreements, through infrastructure and planning agreements to ultimate disposal, pre-lets, forward sales etc. and deals involving claw-backs and overage provisions. Nick acts for both developers and landowners.
Mines and minerals and landfill – this includes acquisition of minerals, mining leases, landfill, restoration and one-off projects such as irrigation or reservoirs, together with the planning and infrastructure agreements necessary to bring projects to fruition. He acts for both mineral and landfill operators and landowners.
Commercial and agricultural conveyancing and related property work – Nick has been involved in numerous sales and purchases over the years, ranging from transactions with low or no monetary value (which may nevertheless be of great importance to a client) to those attracting eight-figure sums.
Landlord and tenant – this includes advice on preparation of and dealing with business tenancies (including renewals, service of requisite notices and advice on dilapidations and related issues) and farm business tenancies and advice relating to agricultural holdings and all aspects of management of tenancies.
